Mexican Belt Sizing Guide
At Labor & Leather, we don’t compromise on craftsmanship—or tradition.
Our exotic and embroidered belts are handcrafted in Mexico by master leather artisans, using old-world techniques that have been passed down for generations.
Because these belts are built to authentic Mexican sizing standards, they run significantly smaller than modern US belt sizing. Rather than altering or resizing these artisan-made pieces, we’ve chosen to preserve their true proportions—the same way they’ve been crafted for decades.
Why Mexican Belts Run Small?
Mexican artisans use a centimeter-based (cm) measurement system, while the US uses inches. A belt that is “Size 34” in Mexico does NOT equal a US Size 34 belt.
Additionally:
- Mexican belts are designed with traditional cowboy proportions, which sit closer to the waistline.
- They often feature full-grain leather or exotic materials that don’t stretch.
- Artisan buckles and embroidery add thickness, affecting fit.
This is why ordering two sizes up ensures a proper, comfortable, traditional fit.
How to Choose Your Size:
These belts run small due to the Mexican metric sizing system (measured in centimeters). The conversion difference means:
The Golden Rule:
Order TWO full sizes up from your standard US men’s pant size.
If you’re between sizes, size up THREE.
Examples:
- Wear a US 28 jean → Order a Size 32 belt
- Wear a US 32 jean → Order a Size 36 belt
- Wear a US 35 jean → Order a Size 38 or 40 belt (size up 3 for in-between sizes)
This method ensures the belt fits comfortably on the center or second hole—where a belt should be worn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do I need to size up two sizes?
Because Mexican belt sizes are measured in centimeters, not inches. A “Size 34” Mexican belt is much closer to a US 30–31” equivalent.
Q: What if I’m between pant sizes?
Size up three sizes to ensure comfort and proper placement on the belt holes.
Q: Do these belts stretch over time?
No. Our belts are made from full-grain leather, exotic hides, or heavily embroidered materials. They remain structured and do not stretch like bonded leather belts.
Q: Where should a properly sized belt buckle on the holes?
Ideally on the middle or second hole—that means you’re wearing the correct size.
Q: Are these belts unisex?
Yes. Teens, women, and smaller-waist men often love our Slim Fit & Youth sizes because they offer authentic cowboy styling without bulky proportions.
Our exotic and embroidered Mexican belts are handcrafted pieces of real artistry, and getting the right size ensures they look and feel as amazing as they were meant to.
